How come i can only wear waterproof mascara?

ive got straight and short asian eyelashes and i can like only wear waterproof mascara, sometimes if i wear regular mascara it doesn't hold a curl at all and it smudges. I heard tht waterproof mascara is bad for u but they are the only ones i can wear , is there an alternative to waterproof that can hold a curl and not smudge? like with regular mascara i curl my eyelashes and after i put on the mascara, they go back to being straight 
p.s. ive tried Great lash by Maybelline in regular non waterproof and it is horrible! doesn't work for me at all)
