Menopause- What Every Woman Needs To Know
by admin on Feb.27, 2010, under Women's Health
Menopause is the normal process of the ovary ceasing to produce eggs for reproduction. As a consequence, in the absence of developing egg follicles where estrogen was previously produced, the female body attempts to adapt to the decreasing levels of estrogen. Sometimes this can be a minimally uncomfortable condition; at other times it can be very uncomfortable with numerous symptoms; the most common of which is hot flashes. Menstrual periods can change during this shutting down process, either becoming longer or shorter, flow can become heavier or lighter, and the interval between periods can become longer or shorter. Eventually the periods cease as the body enters the actual phase of menopause. If one considers the life cycles of a woman, about one-third of her life is spent in pre-puberty and puberty, one-third is spent in reproductive years, and one-third is spent in menopause. This is how the life clock is set, though certainly there are variables such as illness or surgery (hysterectomy or removal of ovaries) which can change it accordingly.
There are estrogen receptors located throughout the body. When these receptors are not joined with estrogen, they act in different ways on their various organ systems. Certainly there are large concentrations of estrogen receptors in the genital structures of the female anatomy. With declining levels of estrogen there can be a decrease in the vaginal wall thickness, and onset of vaginal dryness.? This can cause problems with intercourse which are very distressing. There can also be changes in the bladder and urethra which cause leakage of urine or increased urinary infections. A very common phenomenon is vasomotor instability, or hot flashes. This no doubt arises from unfilled estrogen receptors in the blood vessels. A menopausal woman can go from comfortable to drenching sweat in a few moments. This condition is especially improved with systemic dosages of estrogen. There are other medicines which seem to help. Some are the SSRI or SNRI antidepressants. Also clonidine, which is normally used for blood pressure, can help.? Gabapentin, a seizure medicine can help; there was another seizure medicine called veralipride which was effective, but has been removed from use due to adverse side effects. There are other general health measures which a woman can do to prevent hot flashes. One is to avoid all caffeine, concentrated sugars, stimulants, and alcohol which seem to aggravate the condition. (Smoking makes hot flashes worse, and on the average brings on menopause a year younger in smokers than in non-smokers). One hour of aerobic exercise per day can help with vasomotor instability. One way to make hot flashes more comfortable is to suggest that a woman dress in layers of breathable fabric materials, so she can shed extra clothing when she starts to have a hot flash. In view of the worries about systemic estrogens which came out after the Woman\’s Health Index studies, there is some renewed interest in herbs and phytoestrogens like black cohash and ginseng. The jury is still out on the effectiveness of herbs to help this problem.
Other estrogen receptors are in the skin. Menopause can cause thinning, dryness, decreased skin tone, and wrinkling of the skin. The hair can become thinner and more brittle. The central nervous system can show sleep disorders leading to chronic fatigue, headache, mood swings, nervousness, and irritability. Once again, anywhere there are estrogen receptors there can be a change in system function. One example which is very important is bone. Menopausal women have progressive decrease in bone density and strength, and are more prone to certain fractures, especially in the vertebrae, hips, and wrists.
There are three types of estrogen that we are talking about.? Estrone is produced during menopause, to a degree by other organs such as the liver, the adrenals, and fat cells. Estradiol is the estrogen normally produced by the ovarian follicles, and is stronger than estrone. Estriol is the estrogen primarily produced during pregnancy. Systemic estrogen supplementation used to come from conjugated estrogens found in horse urine, but these are now essentially replaced by more human specific estrogens. What might be expected from giving estrogen to a menopausal woman? Well, first of all, it seems to be safest if started within three years after menopause onset. Women with heart disease, history of stroke or thromboembolism, or breast cancer are excluded right off the bat. Its use has to be evaluated yearly in reference risk to benefit ratio. But if a woman meets these criteria, she might expect relief from hot flashes, some reversal of vaginal atrophy, positive skin and hair changes, and stronger bones. As mentioned, the WHI (Women\’s Health Initiative) found that the addition of progesterone to the estrogen caused increased risk in several areas, including heart and vascular. Starting estrogen after age 65 seemed to lead to increased dementia and other complications.
So, in summary, it might be said that we live in a culture where youth and secondary sexual characteristics are highly promoted and valued. Entry into a new and different life phase is a bit daunting, and certainly brings on sadness and a sense of uncertainty. Work with your doctor to make it as comfortable as possible. Have a thorough physical exam to be sure that other medical problems such as thyroid or diabetes are not adding to the symptomatology. Discuss the benefits and risks of hormone replacement. There are other medicines to increase bone strength and integrity, and other medicines for hot flashes. Take care of yourself: exercise regularly, keep your weight down, and remember that caffeine and alcohol can make hot flashes worse. As they say,
Methods of Treating Fibroids Naturally
by admin on Jan.30, 2010, under Women's Health
There is no one single or simple cause of fibroids, which are often thought to be the result of a prolonged and complex combination of circumstances that might have been prevented with hindsight and greater awareness, but then again could have happened anyway. Sometimes, doctors are at a loss to explain why fibroids occur in individuals, but very often a closer look by an alternative therapist can uncover some subtle causes.
Conventional doctors do not deal in treating fibroids naturally, preferring instead to recommend 2 options.
1. Leaving fibroids untreated as they naturally shrink during the menopause
2. Surgery
Option 1 may well be viable if your fibroids are small and your symptoms are relatively minor, or if you have just a short time to wait before you believe your menopause will start. However, if your symptoms are severe and you are years away from the menopause, then this is an option which will leave most women feeling that their situation is hopeless.
Surgery is often seen as a quick-fix, but in actual fact it can be anything but! Certain types of surgery have long recovery times. In particular, although a hysterectomy is a long term solution, the recovery time is in months rather than weeks and can cause psychological issues in many women. Plus, it takes away your ability to have children. Surgery which removes individual fibroids is only ever temporary as unless you can eliminate whatever has caused your fibroids in the first place, that cause will still be there and as you still have your uterus, regrowth is very likely.
One of the main issues which needs to be examined if you are looking at treating fibroids naturally is the question of estrogen. It is well known that most women with fibroids have excess estrogen. However, not all women with excess estrogen will have fibroids! Much of the estrogen which is evident in women with fibroids is not always natural estrogen. Very often it stems from environmental toxins which are evident in certain pesticides and plastics. This type of synthetic estrogen becomes locked in the liver, making it almost impossible for the body to eliminate is under normal circumstances. Naturally occurring estrogen is usually more evident in overweight women, as it is both manufactured by, and stored in the fat cells.
Looking at ways of reducing estrogen is an excellent way of treating fibroids naturally. To eliminate environmentally induced estrogen, one of the best ways to do this is to undergo a thorough liver detox and there is much information on the internet about the best types to follow. You must ensure that your information comes from a reputable source. Look out for detoxes which include the use of herbs which are specifically known to help cleanse the liver, such as Milk Thistle, Dandelion and Artichoke. You must also ensure that you drink plenty of water to aid the detox. To reduce the levels of naturally occurring estrogen, you must reduce the levels of fat within the body\’s cells and realistically this can only be done by following a healthy diet and aiming to get to an acceptable weight.
There are other very helpful ways of treating fibroids naturally, and these include increasing exercise, switching to organic produce wherever possible and applying gentle massage to the area to improve circulation. Heat therapy can also be useful in alleviating symptoms temporarily.

The Natural Way To Treat Fibroids
by admin on Jan.30, 2010, under Women's Health
Many women are very disappointed to discover that there is actually very little that can be done medically to get rid of fibroids, with many doctors recommending taking no action at all as fibroids will shrink when you hit the menopause. Now for many women, this is simply unacceptable as their symptoms may have become unbearable or they may have many years to go until they are likely to reach the menopause.
Alternative practitioners often advocate a natural way to treat fibroids and if you are the type of person who is happy to take control of your own treatment, then this is an option worth considering. Many women worldwide have seen tremendous success and others have been very disappointed. The women who have all seen a significant reduction in both the symptoms from their fibroids and the actual size of them have all got one thing in common-motivation.
In some respects I guess success depends on just how much you want your fibroids to disappear and whether you are prepared to put up with a few months of following dietary and exercise guidelines, as well as making lifestyle changes.
It is almost impossible to identify exactly what has caused fibroids in an individual. Sure there are often common causes, but as fibroids are thought to grow as a result of the subtle interaction of a number of circumstances, pinpointing just what these are can be very difficult and, in some respects unnecessary. What is important is to know what to do about them!
By using a natural way to treat fibroids which tackles every possible cause of fibroids, you leave no stone unturned and this then causes them to shrink.
One good treatment for fibroids is detoxing. Very often, estrogen mimicking compounds derived from pesticides and additives become stored in the liver and the body\’s normal processes simply cannot eliminate them. Estrogen is a major player in fibroid formation and reducing the levels in the body is a good starting point.
Detoxing the liver can remove these compounds and therefore slow down fibroid growth. If this approach is coupled with reducing natural estrogen, then the effect can be significant. Our fat cells are a secondary source of estrogen and this is why many overweight women can be prone to fibroids. Therefore, something a simple as losing weight can be a very successful natural way to treat fibroids.
Some women are very prone to inflammatory conditions and research has shown that these women are at a higher risk of fibroids. Eating naturally anti-inflammatory foods can help, for example, oats. The spice cumin, also has a calming effect on tumors.
Treating the symptoms of fibroids is also important, and simple techniques like abdominal massage can help to relieve congestion in the area and improve blood flow, which, in turn, can ease the pain. Also, heat therapy such as a hot water bottle or even a warm bath is a good natural way to treat fibroids.
Fibroids are a condition which respond very well to natural remedies and they are an ideal condition to treat because as they are so rarely life-threatening. It makes complete sense to try out a natural treatment for fibroids before resorting to surgery or any of the hormonal drugs which can cause their own side effects.
