What is That in Your Hand?: Reflexions of a Divapreneur

by admin on Mar.27, 2010, under Womens Interest

People ask me all the time how I got into designing hand bags and jewelry. Well, like most things in life, it?s a long story. But the short version is that I was at an exhibition one day when I found myself drawn to a particular stand where hand bags were being sold. What I really liked was the fact that all the bags were made from cloth. You have to remember that at the time, fabric hand bags were only just becoming popular. I ended up buying some of the bags but felt the pricing was a bit low, so to test my theory, I tried to resell a few. I ended up selling all of them with people asking for more. They were really beautiful and each one had a very distinct and unique style. Not long after, I traveled abroad with the hope of continuing to order bags to resell. However, I suddenly found myself up against brick walls that I had never encountered before. Strange vocabulary, like customs, duties, textile quotas, shipping and other similarly dreadful words suddenly crept into my everyday dictionary. I soon realized that my new found ?open door?, had just slammed shut in my face. So I found myself at cross roads, as indeed those of us who call ourselves divapreneurs or entrepreneurs, are also at crossroads ? being whether to give in, or trudge on hopefully as we stand by helplessly watching the world economy throw its tantrums.

But I think it does take a different sort of mindset to be able to look through all this to see some of the positive spin offs of what?s going on. For tough times never come empty handed; they certainly bring with them the negatives, but also the positives, in the form of new opportunities, fresh ideas, etc. When I saw myself standing in front of a shut door with the bags, eventually I chose to rise to the challenge, and rather than just SELL bags, I decided to DESIGN bags. Easier said than done because I didn?t know anything about bags in the first place, and knew even less about designing, but we won?t go there right now, ?cause it?ll mess up my story?

Anyway, that?s the bag thing, but when I first started making jewelry, my personal economy was in such bad shape that it took me seven months to save the $35 I needed to pay for the class. Then it took me another six months of saving before I could buy the tools I needed to actually take the class. I wish I could say it ended there, but it didn?t, because I began by taking a very basic jewelry class that was so badly taught that I had to take it twice before I could figure out what it was about. My first creation was what I called ?the ugly pink and pearl necklace set?. It was so ugly, that I hid it in one of my drawers as soon as I got home. After a few months, common sense prevailed and I figured, it didn?t really make any sense to have taken the class and not do anything with what I had learned. So I wore the necklace set one day and a colleague of mine happened to see it and asked me where I had bought ?that beautiful necklace?. When I told her that I had made it myself, she asked me to show it to her boss, a college professor who also happened to be a jewelry lover. Of course I didn?t, but eventually she did mention it. Not only did her boss like the ugly pink and pearl necklace set, but she immediately placed an order for jewelry and subsequently became my best customer!

Looking back now at how both bag and jewelry evolved, I realize that each began with either a challenge, a problem, or both, and it wasn?t so much the obstacles that had held me back, but the fact that I couldn?t look beyond them to recognize what I had in my hands. I learned a powerful lesson on how important it is to develop a mindset that matches the creativity because if I didn?t think I had something of value to offer, no one else would either and that if I could see it, then I could have it, regardless of the challenges and obstacles. But honestly, what gave me that extra push was also the fact that I would wake up in the mornings with this nagging feeling that I had something in my hands that I wasn?t using. I would look down at my hands, but the more I looked the less I saw, until I got on the internet one day and started researching the work of other artists and designers. I studied their different styles with the hope that this would somehow help me to discover mine. I also tried to learn new techniques and test ideas for designs, for both bags and jewelry.

Everyday I wake up, determined to keep walking, as I keep looking at my hands and wondering what is hidden in them that I haven?t yet recognized. It?s a never ending journey and I?m on mine. What about you?

How I Am Curing Recurrent Bacterial Vaginosis Naturally

by admin on Feb.02, 2010, under Women's Health

When I got up this morning, my fears were confirmed. I had another outbreak of bacterial vaginosis. I could have kicked myself really as I knew it was self-inflicted. I had already worked out just what was causing my outbreaks but I still had it! I knew enough about curing recurrent bacterial vaginosis not to put myself through this again, but yet still did!

You see, what had happened was that I was bought a beautiful expensive hat box gift at Christmas which was filled with gorgeous toiletries of a brand which I absolutely loved. It had opulent face creams, expensive scrubs, an oil body spray, a hand butter and a wonderfully rich-smelling shower gel.

Over the holidays, I had loved using these products and two days ago, put the shower gel in my shower. Now a bit of background here….For a couple of years, on and off, I had suffered from the indignity of bacterial vaginosis. I had tried all sorts of creams and gels and even three courses of antibiotics, all to no avail. I just couldn\’t understand it, I kept myself clean, ate the right sorts of foods and didn\’t smoke.

Eventually, after much research, it turned out that my BV was actually caused by a combination of overwashing and, if I so much as used anything other than an unperfumed soap around my vagina. I eventually discovered just what was needed for curing recurrent bacterial vaginosis in my case and have stuck to it since. Well, almost since….Back to the shower gel…..Well, it was just too nice not to use it and I couldn\’t resist. I figured that something so expensive must have been thoroughly tested and could not harm me.

Just yesterday I used it in the shower, I put a big dollop on the sponge and washed myself all over, except \”down below\”. Being mindful of my sensitivity, I rinsed off most of the remainder and gently washed my vagina and felt a burning, tingling sensation immediately. As quickly as I could, I rinsed the area with water and the burning quickly subsided. I spent the rest of the day chastising myself for being so stupid, but hoping that I hadn\’t caused an outbreak of BV.

This morning when I got up, I could smell that horrible, familiar fishy odor and I knew I only had myself to blame!

At least I now know what I didn\’t before, that curing recurrent bacterial vaginosis naturally is not that difficult, once you know the steps that work for you.

One of the problems with BV is that the causes can vary from woman to woman. Very often, a woman might not even discover her specific trigger point (I was lucky, I did!) but although useful, it is not essential to do so. Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an imbalance of the naturally occurring bacterial in the vagina, and there is always something which causes it to happen. Common \”triggers\” include smoking, eating a poor diet, intercourse with a new partner, overwashing, douching and using perfumed products. Some women are also more prone around the time of the menopause.

For me, I know just what will work for treating my recurrent bacterial vaginosis. I shall avoid the temptation to wash several times a day (just to get rid of the smell!) and when I do wash, I won\’t sit in a bath, but will have a quick shower and only use plain soap. Probiotic yogurt works for me too-I will soak a tampon in it and leave it in my vagina for a couple of hours later today. I will also get out the probiotic capsules which are in my medicine cupboard and start taking those for a week. The last things I will do are to wear my old trusty cotton panties and use a thin panty pad to help soak up some of the discharge as I can change this at work a couple of times if the smell is becoming noticeable.

I am very careful about curing recurrent bacterial vaginosis promptly as repeated outbreaks can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and even infertility.

The strategies that work for me may well be useful for you if you also have a problem with BV. However, every woman is different and there are a full range of treatments you can adopt to ensure that you completely eradicate this condition.

And why am I writing about it today? Simply because I am cross with myself, and as someone who regularly writes articles about BV, I should know better!

by admin on Jan.30, 2010, under Makeup Q & A

i have started wearing foundation and things, but its started to give me spots. I take it off at night, but people are saying wear moisturizer underneath and cleanse and tone everyday. im confused please help!
Answer :————————
Stop wearing foundation is the obvious answer but if you have to, get a mineral foundation as it's better for your skin. Use cleanser, toner , then moisturiser before you put it on and last thing at night.

Birthday cake

Cake by my husband, bless him.

It's my birthday! I am 42, which is the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything; and grown-up enough to buy whatever I want, for myself. (Often the best birthday gift is one's own, as every woman discovers sooner or later.)
So, what shall I get? The local mall has a Nordstrom and a Sephora, which covers most eventualities. I'm thinking of berry-coloured lipstick, calming smells that help one sleep, or sexy perfume. Or all three, of course. What do you love right now? Anything enjoyable and fun; not face-cream, which is a necessity, like toothpaste.
